International Success at Orientarium ZOO Łódź – Complex Operation on Indian Elephant Successfully Completed

Category:

This past weekend, one of the most challenging veterinary procedures in the history of Polish zoological gardens took place at Orientarium ZOO Łódź. Taru – an Indian elephant and long-time resident of the zoo – underwent a complex tusk removal surgery, which was carried out successfully.

The operation was necessitated by complications following an injury sustained during interactions with other elephants in the herd. The damaged tusk had become infected, requiring urgent and specialized surgical intervention.

A team of world-renowned veterinary experts from South Africa, Estonia, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Malaysia traveled to Łódź to support the local veterinary staff with their expertise. The procedure was also observed by veterinarians from zoos across Poland, as surgeries of this nature are extremely rare in the country and offer a valuable learning opportunity for the wider veterinary community.

The operation lasted several hours and went smoothly. The tusk was safely removed, and Taru is now recovering well.

This milestone represents not only a major achievement for the veterinary team in Łódź but also a shining example of effective international collaboration. It further reinforces the vital role of Orientarium ZOO Łódź in advancing modern veterinary medicine in both Poland and Europe.
