A huge success in Poland. A Sumatran orangutan was born at the Łódź Zoo’s Orientarium

A baby Sumatran orangutan – one of the rarest and most endangered species of great apes in the world – was born at the Orientarium at Łódź Zoo. This is the first birth of a Sumatran orangutan in Polish history and a unique breeding success of immense importance for the conservation of endangered species.
– The baby was born on April 1 and is a male. From the very first moments, he has been under the loving care of his mother, Ketawa, for whom this is her first offspring. It is all the more gratifying that the birth went smoothly, and the young female is displaying strong nurturing behaviors and maternal instincts,” says Michał Cichoń, orangutan keeper at the Orientarium at Łódź Zoo.

A Success Important Not Only for Łódź Zoo

The birth of a Sumatran orangutan is one of the rarest events in zoos worldwide today. Over the past 12 months, only a few such cases have been recorded in European and global zoos. This highlights the significance of this success – not only for the Orientarium Zoo Łódź, but also for the international conservation and breeding program for this species.

In the wild, Sumatran orangutans are found exclusively on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and their population is steadily declining. The main threats include habitat loss, human activity, and illegal logging.

A Real Contribution to the Conservation of an Endangered Species

The birth of a young orangutan is not only a cause for joy but also a testament to the high standard of breeding care and the commitment of the Łódź Zoo Orientarium team to efforts aimed at protecting animals threatened with extinction.

“This is one of the most important moments in the history of our zoo and a huge source of pride for the entire team. The birth of a Sumatran orangutan is proof of the highest level of breeding care, but above all, a real contribution to the conservation of an endangered species,” says Michał Gołędowski, Director of Breeding and Development at Orientarium Zoo Łódź.

Experts emphasize that every birth of this species is of immense value today. It is not only a breeding success but also a symbol of hope for the future of Sumatran orangutans worldwide.

The new resident can already be seen

In the coming weeks, the keepers will closely monitor the youngster’s development and the dynamics within the family group. The mother’s peace and comfort, as well as the baby’s proper development, are of key importance. At this point, everything is proceeding according to plan. Visitors to the Orientarium Zoo Łódź already have the opportunity to see the new resident during their visit.
